Covent Garden is a famous and fashionable area of London located in the heart of London's West End. It is best known as the capital's most popular place for entertainment and leisure activities. You can go shopping here, watch the street performers, visit bars, restaurants, theatres and the Royal Opera House.

Covent Garden started as a fruit and vegetable market - the largest in England - which covered the whole of the square and occupied many of the buildings. Later it was transformed into a shopping centre, and gradually the streets around became a mecca for shoppers. These days at the heart of the Covent Garden piazzaⁱ you can still find the famous market, which sells antiques, handicraftsⁱⁱ, china, jewellery, clothing and gifts.

In the open piazza jugglers, mime artists and musicians entertain the crowds. You can watch the daily show from open-air restaurants, cafés and bars around the piazza. Covent Garden is the only area of London where street entertainment is licensedⁱⁱⁱ. That is why it attracts performers from around the world. However their success depends on the weather: they are lucky if it is not raining or snowing. There is an undercover^iv performance area which has saved many street performers and tourists on rainy days, but it is not enough for all. Still, performances go on 365 days a year, except Christmas Day.

If you are interested in sightseeing, there is a lot to see and do in Covent Garden. The British Museum has one of the largest collections of historical objects in the world.
